Our Journey Begins Here

Codecom, LLC was established in 1977 under the name American Telecom, Inc. The company started representing NEC for sales of key telephone systems, Tellabs SF equipment, and Warren power equipment. An installation group was also established to support the systems sold and to provide PBX and key system installation service to telephone companies in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. An outside plant construction group was also established. By 1981, we had 150 employees and three field offices. The products and services offered had expanded to many new areas.

Our Journey

Milestones That Define CODECOM's Journey

The name was changed in 1981 after a re-organization of the Company which saw the outside plant construction operations spun off as a separate company which was subsequently sold. The entry into product design and manufacturing was done through Codecom Rural Communications, Inc. in 1986, which introduced a revolutionary product that allows for the interface of a regular telephone device to a cellular radio. That company was merged with Telular, Inc. in 1991 and subsequently taken public (Telular Corp – NASDAQ NM: WRLS). In 1988, a paging radio network was constructed by another affiliate, Celpage, Inc. to provide service in Puerto Rico, which subsequently expanded to other countries in Latin America. This company changed its name to Optivon, Inc. to more adequately convey its new purpose as a facilities based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier, serving Carriers and Enterprise customers in Puerto Rico and the USA.

Codecom has concentrated on the sale of equipment and services, directed to telephone companies and large government or private communications systems users. The market area was expanded to cover the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as other countries.

1977 - Established as American Telecom, Inc.

Codecom, LLC. was established in 1977 under the name American Telecom, Inc., representing various telecommunication equipment manufacturers and selling to the Puerto Rico Telephone Company. We rapidly grew our solutions portfolio to include digital telephone central offices, fiber optics systems, PBXs; as well as installation services of outside plant telephone cables throughout Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. By 1981, we had 150 employees and three field offices.

1981 - Reorganization and Strategic Growth

The name was changed in 1981 after a company reorganization, when we spun off and sold the outside plant construction business. Since then, Codecom has focused on the integration and sale of equipment and services directed to telephone and wireless carriers as well as to the Public Safety market like police, fire, medical emergency, and emergency management.

1985 - Launch of Codecom Rural Communications (CRC)

In 1985 Codecom started a new company named Codecom Rural Communications (CRC), for the manufacture and sale of fixed cellular telephones. The technology used was in association with Tellular, Inc. who held the concept patent of our design. CRC worked together with Tellular, covering the international market, successfully selling in Puerto Rico, Europe, and Asia. CRC was subsequently merged with Tellular in 1993. Shortly thereafter, Motorola purchased 20% of the CRC/Tellular merged company, and went public via IPO, now trading in NASDAQ under the symbol (WRLS).

1988 - Creation and Expansion of Celpage

In 1988, Codecom started a paging company in Puerto Rico called Celpage, experiencing rapid growth to include operations in Puerto Rico, Atlanta, GA., Costa Rica, Brazil, and Argentina with more than 1,000 direct employees. Celpage was an innovator in the industry and was Motorola’s largest alphanumeric pager customer in the Americas. Our business model was frequently used by Motorola as a case study to improve the paging markets in other countries.

1993 - CRC Merger, Motorola Investment & IPO

In 1993, CRC merged with Tellular. Shortly thereafter, Motorola acquired a 20% ownership stake in the merged CRC/Tellular entity. The company went public through an IPO and began trading on NASDAQ under the symbol WRLS. This milestone reflected the commercial success and technological relevance of the fixed cellular platform developed through Codecom’s innovation.

Late 1990s — Transition to Internet & IP-Based Services

As the paging technology subsided, Celpage was reengineered into an Internet Service Provider in the late 1990s and subsequently became an IP based Telephone Carrier under the new name of Optivon, catering to businesses in Puerto Rico and the United States market through its office in Sarasota, FL.

2024 — Unified Under One Name

In 2024, Optivon was fully merged into Codecom, consolidating decades of expertise under a single brand. Today, Codecom delivers integrated telecommunications, carrier-grade solutions, IP services, and public safety communications, all under one unified organization built on nearly five decades of industry evolution.
